Home Built Hero
Doug DeLucca of Boca Raton, FL, is the kind of racer that deserves a ton of credit. His '87 Grand National is an extremely well-built example of a little going a long way. Doing all of the work himself, Doug has already gone as fast as 11.96 at 112 mph using a stock, ported turbo, GN1 3-inch downpipe, and a homemade methanol system. He has done this on a factory long-block, stock intercooler, and stock computer, which he tuned himself on the track. On the suspension side of things, Doug uses a pair of QA1 front shocks, no front sway bar, and a 1 3/8-inch ATR-style rear sway bar. Metco lower control arms and UMI adjustable upper control arms keep the rear in place while Mickey Thompson 275/60/15 drag radials wrap around the stock rear wheels and help move this GN 60 feet in 1.62 seconds. All of this in a full-weight, show-winning, homebuilt street car. You have got to respect that.
